l'Histoire du Soldat and the Nightingale

soldat6_opt

L'Histoire du Soldat is a musical gem of early modern, 20th century classical music.

Written by Stravinsky for a group of poor, unemployed artists and musicians during the crisis just after the first world war. In its form of a traveling musical theater production it is the first of its kind. Stravinsky based his composition on an old Russian fairy tale of a soldier that sells his violin (soul) to the devil. With this work Stravinsky has been influenced for the first time by contemporary music such as the recently introduced phenomenon of Jazz and he breaks with his Russian music period. This work fits into the series of his masterpieces The Firebird, Les Noces, Petrouchka and Le Sacre du Printemps. With l'Histoire Stravinsky  strived for a mobile production that could be played at any location using the local cultural context. This new version of l'Histoire was created in July 2011 in Yogyakarta in Indonesia, with prominent Javanese dancers. It will be toured in theaters throughout Java and an international follow up tour is in preparation.  The Dutch Chamber Music Company (DCMC) consists of seven members and is an initiative of talented musicians of the Brabants Orchestra., the Netherlands.  DMCM asked theater maker Gerard Mosterd to create a Javanese version of the soldiers story. Mosterd who has been an active choreographer and teacher in Indonesia for more than ten years focuses on a contemporary version of l'Histoire with elements of the old Javanese royal court dancing tradition intertwined. Complex and dynamic music such as that of Stravinsky has never been interpreted by Javanese dancers who traditionally are masters of slow, subtle movement. The Faustian based morality tale by Ramuz will be interpreted by the world famous Javanese dancers Martinus Miroto and Eko Supriyanto. Both are known for their collaboration with acclaimed director Peter Sellars. Both performers starred in the film Opera Jawa by film director Garin Nugroho. Eko Supriyanto toured as a dancer with the U.S. pop icon Madonna and collaborated with Samoan director Lemi Ponifasio. Actress Sri Qadariatin and actor Jamaluddin Latif are prominent members of the avant-garde theater group Teater Garasi from Yogyakarta. Qadariatin performed worldwide a lead role in Bob Wilson's I La Galigo  and Persephone.

Narrated and provided with shadow play by one of the most prominent and innovative puppeteers of our time, Slamet Gundono, winner of the Prince Claus Award 2005. For this performance, he designed new screens and wayang puppets which will place the famous story by Andersen in a new perspective.
