Ibu Bhumi

Brief

Ibu Bhumi is a sequel to the successful project 'Paradise ... a Woman?' in 2007 which was performed in over forty Dutch theatres. In the inter-disciplinary performance Ibu Bhumi (Mother Earth), Gerard Mosterd works together with the renowned Indonesian Silat expert and choreographer Benny Krisnawardi. In this production six performers approach the concept of matriarchal functioning in todays world from different perspectives as well as the matrilineal structure of the Minangkabau, society, a people on Sumatra. Included is the use of pencak silat (actually an ancient Sumatran variant on this: minang silek) and contemporary movement vocabularies joined in by Dutch amateur youngsters. Ibu Bhumi is an educational project and connects disciplines, generations, cultures and old and new. Connected to the performance is the possibility of a workshop related post performance lecture or Q&A. The performance will premiere on April 18, 2009 at the Tropen Theatre in Amsterdam (Royal Tropical Institute).
