gerardGerard Mosterd

Gerard Mosterd advanced dancing and practiced dance improvisation as a child. Majoring in academic dance, folk dance, modern dance and music, he eventually graduated from the dance department of the Royal Conservatory, The Hague where he created his first choreographies. Subsequently Mosterd enjoyed an international career with renowned European dance companies, performing globally works by classical and contemporary choreographers. After this he returned to the Netherlands and since 1996 has been involved in producing independent, small scale physical theatre projects. From his home base in the Netherlands, he annually launches new productions, thematically exploring the connection and disconnection of different cultural identities, notably between Europe and Asia.

Annually he has presented, since 1999, new productions, touring the Netherlands and in particular given performances at the the biggest Eurasian festival in the world, the Dutch-Indonesian cultural festival Pasar Malam Besar (now Tong Tong Fair), to which Gerard Mosterd introduced modern dance. Gerard Mosterd’s productions are often autobiographically inspired which means that in his works the advantages and disadvantages of growing up in a cross-cultural environment; the complex process of integrating immigrants into Dutch society; and his own affinity with matriarchal, Non-Western societies are examined.
