Yukio Waguri (Japan)
Profile
Born in 1952 Tokyo Japan, started dancing with Tatsumi Hijikata (1928-86), the founder of Butoh, in 1972, and was the leading male dancer in the troupe which was then widely known as‘the Dance Theater of Darkness’ (Ankoku Butoh). Waguri now performs, teaches and gives workshops vigorously in various occasions and venues both at home and abroad.
The manner Waguri dance is often said to be as solid as crystal, limp and smart as leopard, subtle and fine as willow, his works are constructive rather than improvisational, he often employs a form of dance notation which is specialized for Butoh (Butoh Fu) consisting mainly of sort of poetic words uttered by Hijikata during the creative process of his works, which were effectively used to awaken as well as stimulate images needed in the body among the dancers in the troupe to move/dance.
Waguri published a Butoh book with DVD-ROM titled Butou Kaden, which has been read worldwide and receives numerous interests as it unveils the essence of Butoh, which has quite often been hidden covered with the phrase ‘the mystery of the Far East’.
