Teater Garasi - Laboratory of Theatre Creations
Teater Garasi, founded in 1993, is an artist collective and a ‘laboratory’ of theatre/performing arts based in Jogjakarta-Indonesia. Teater Garasi has been at the cutting edge of the contemporary theatre/performing arts scene in Indonesia, and known for its commitment to develop fresh and genuine theater/performing arts idioms. Each and every Garasi’s work is an attempt to build a critical dialogue with its public/society.
Under the stewardship of its artistic director, Yudi Ahmad Tajudin, and executive director, Kusworo Bayu Aji, since 2004 Teater Garasi has been presenting its works on international stage, such as Insomnia 48-Singapore (2004), In Transit Festival held by The House of World Cultures Berlin-Germany (2005), Physical Theatre Festival and The Saison Foundation program Tokyo-Japan (2005 and 2006).
As a not for profit institution, Teater Garasi tries to implement and facilitate works that can enhance the increasing of artistic competence and critical awareness of Indonesian theatre practitioners/artists upon their broader environment through these programs as follow:
A. Theatre Creations (theatre production and collaboration project)
B. Theatre Studies (research, translation, books publishing)
C. Knowledge Improvement (artist in residency, workshop & discussion, internship)
Since established in 1993, to carrying out its programs, Teater Garasi has built creative interactions and partnership with various institutions, nationally or internationally, such as: Centre Culturel Francaise (CCF) and The Japan Foundation, Asialink, OSI-Open Society Institute Development, The Royal Netherland Embassy, Hivos, theater/performing art institutions and festivals within Indonesia and abroad.
